Blog Post 3 - Formal Elements of a Playtested Game

The Rule Sheets which I playtested were Group 1’s rule sheet, Group 3’s rule sheet, Group 4’s rule sheet, and Group 7’s rule sheet. I will be listing the formal elements of Group 3’s rule sheet, Mario and Adam’s game called Cooking Ninja.

Players

  • One on one game – player vs. player game structure

  • Two Playstyles

    • Going for high risk, high reward recipes

    • Going for low risk, low reward recipes

Objectives

  • The central objective of the game is to reach 20 points by baking different items that are assigned a point value based on how many ingredients they use and how risky they are to bake

Procedures

  • The deck of ingredient cards are shuffled

  • Both players draw six cards each to have in their hand

  • The players each roll a die and whoever scores the highest number goes first

  • In a turn, the players can look at the recipe list and decide what to bake based on what ingredients they have.

    • If they can bake something, they must attempt to bake it.

    • If they cannot bake anything, they discard their entire hand and draw six new cards.

  • The player now rolls the dice, and based on the number that they roll, the baking event will either be silent or loud.

    • If the baking event is silent, they receive the points for baking the item.

    • If the baking event is loud, they do not receive points.

  • At the end of the turn, the player must draw enough cards from the draw pile so that they always have six cards by the end of a turn.

Rules

  • Players are allowed to draw from the deck

  • Players are allowed to play cards in certain combinations in order to bake items

  • Players must roll the die when baking an item unless specified otherwise, such as in the case of baking Macarons

  • There must be this many cards in each deck

    • 10 Sugar

    • 6 Eggs

    • 6 Frosting

    • 6 Milk

    • 4 Sprinkles

    • 4 Chocolate Chips

  • The player must make their move within 15 seconds

    • If no move is made within that time frame, their turn is passed on to the other player

  • The player is only allowed to have a maximum of six cards in their hand

  • There are a limited number of items which the player can bake with their ingredient cards.

    • Chocolate Chip Cookies can be baked with Eggs, Sugar and Chocolate chips

    • Cake can be baked with Eggs, Sugar, Milk, Frosting, and Sprinkles

    • Macarons can be baked with Sugar and Eggs

    • Cupcakes can be baked with Frosting and Sprinkles

    • Chocolate Chip Pancakes can be baked with Chocolate chips, Milk, and Sugar

    • Cinnamon Buns can be baked with Sugar, Frosting, and Milk

    • As a general rule of thumb, baked items requiring higher amounts of ingredient cards offer the player more points

      • However, they also have a higher chance of making noise, as opposed to low ingredient baked items that have lower chances of making noise

Resources

  • There are two types of resources available to the player in this game

    • Ingredient cards - these are used to craft into baked goods

    • Points - these are gained by crafting ingredients into baked goods

Conflict

  • The player must successfully roll the die and make no noise when baking

  • If the player rolls the die and makes noise while baking, they will not receive points

Boundaries

  • As there is no movement in the game, there are no technical player boundaries

  • The player may not make up their own recipes to craft a baked item for points

Outcome

  • One player wins by having more points than the other

  • One player loses by having less points than the other
